Episode 18 — Inverse Graphs

Linear Function and its Inverse

Learners will be able to:

• Identify points on the graph of a linear function and swap their coordinates to find corresponding points on its inverse graph. • Sketch the inverse graph of a linear function by reflecting the original graph over the line y = x or by swapping the x and y variables in the equation of the original function. • Write the equation of the inverse function using the inverse function notation, given the equation of the original linear function. • Explain that the inverse of a linear function is also a linear function with a mirror image across the axis of symmetry y = x. • Use the property that every point (x,y) on f(x) has a mirror image (y,x) on g(x), and that these points are equidistant from the line y = x.
